Warnings / Precautions

Before taking Cephalexin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or to penicillins or other cephalosporins, or if you have any other allergies. Before using this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all nonprescription drugs or herbal products you may use, especially live vaccines and probenecid. This drug may decrease the effectiveness of the combination birth control pills. This can lead to pregnancy. You may need to use an additional form of birth control while using this drug. This drug may cause false positive results with some diabetic urine test products (cupric sulfate-type). This drug can also affect the results of some laboratory tests. Make sure the laboratory staff and your doctors know how to use this drug.

Do not start or stop any medicine without approval from your doctor or pharmacist.

Side Effects

An upset stomach, headache, fatigue, dizziness, or diarrhea may occur.

If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor right away if any of these effects occur; they are unlikely, but serious side effects may occur, such as changes in mental mood.

Tell your doctor right away if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, yellowing of eyes and skin, dark urine, new signs of infection (e.g., persistent sore throat or fever), easy bruising/bleeding, or change in the amount of urine.

This drug may rarely cause a severe bowel condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to a resistant bacterium. This condition can occur during therapy or even weeks after treatment has stopped. 

A severe allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Keftab and seek medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:

  • an allergic reaction (difficulty in breathing; closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, face, or tongue, hives, or skin rash);
  • skin rash, redness, or itching;
  • severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea;
  • mucous membranes or blood in the stool, or
  • unusual bleeding or bruising.

Other less serious side effects are more likely to occur. Continue to take Keftab and talk to your doctor if you experience mild nausea or diarrhea, or a yeast infection of the mouth or vagina.
